Arsenic (As)

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element present in soil, water, and air, so it can turn up in foods grown or raised in the environment. It occurs in both organic and inorganic forms, with inorganic arsenic considered the more harmful; because exposure at certain levels can be harmful to health, the FDA monitors and regulates arsenic in foods, dietary supplements, and cosmetics.

Daily-intake limits

  • Prop 6510 µg/day

This limit is for inorganic arsenic, but the basic panel measures total arsenic. Comparing total against the inorganic limit is conservative; speciation testing is needed to confirm how much is inorganic.

  • EFSA0.00857 µg/kg bw/day(scaled by body weight)

This limit is for inorganic arsenic, but the basic panel measures total arsenic. Comparing total against the inorganic limit is conservative; speciation testing is needed to confirm how much is inorganic.

See the Regulation Standards page for what each body measures.
